A day in the life…

The Bastard Moonchild’s demented thoughts and mundane stories

It’s the start of the Lunar New Year. And during this time every year, my mom and sis would buy those newspapers with the Chinese New Year specials. Goes to show how they really abide to these predictions and traditions, even if we’re not Chinese (I may have chinky eyes, but I’m not Chinese… or so I believe… can’t trace who is in our tree).

Out of boredom (I woke up alone in the house last Chinese Christmas Saturday because they were off to DV), I got one of those specials and read some of those predictions and stuff. I skipped the other parts and went to the year of the Goat (yes, I have a beard) to read what this year has in store for me.

Nice intro: I got four unlucky stars and two lucky stars plus some other lucky stars from other animal signs that will neutralize the unlucky stars, so fortune is half-good, half-bad. Oookay. Whatever that means.

Money is good, but no luck in gambling. So no Lotto betting for me. Sucks, I would’ve wanted to win that P150M jackpot. Ah, yeah, someone won it already. There you go.

Be careful of what you say and beware of gossips and intrigues. That’s why my new motto is "shut up." Would the last part mean "gossips and intrigues against me?" If so, that’s pretty interesting. ‘Coz I’m not one person you should waste your time on.

I don’t remember everything. Basically that’s it. But should I actually believe in them? As they say, you make your own destiny. So whatever rocks my boat, eh?

Still, I guess it won’t hurt to zip my mouth.

Hmm, maybe it’s bad breath that I should be wary of.

On weddings and sluggings

It was an interesting weekend.

Last Saturday, I attended a wedding of a close friend of mine from college. Yep. After almost 5 years, She and Mike have decided to tie the knot. Yay!

See, I have been a witness to this love story of theirs. Not to mention that She was the first person that I have met in UST (ever!). From enrolment to graduation, I have seen her highs and lows during college. And their meeting was one of those highlights. And if I’m not mistaken, I was the first among our barkada to have met Mike. Despite the age difference (which I would not mention, mabubuko ang age ng isa dyan, kung nababasa man niya ito, hehe!), they have managed to meet stay together and enjoy a long engagement for how many years.

That wedding was one of the most touching I have ever seen. You can see in each other’s faces how happy they are. No, happy is an understatement. Clarence and I can’t help but be ecstatic for them (Pink and Fritzie came in late, but just in time to have photo-ops with the newlyweds).

Yep, that was a wedding that was pretty unforgettable… not to mention that it sounded like it came straight out of an FM station. From the lector and the reader to the emcee and the groom (syempre),  astig ang mga boses. Ang lamig, ever!

I’ve posted some pics on my multiply website, so if you want to check out this momentous event in the lives of She and Mike, click here. Still waiting for Cla’s pics, so it might get updated.

To Mr and Mrs. Michael Borricano, go forth and spread the love! Congratulations and best wishes!

What is it with boxing that makes us so… weird?

When I was a kid, I would watch boxing matches on TV whenever my dad would tune in. So I guess that’s why until now, I’d never miss those big bouts of Espinosa, Lewis, dela Hoya and everyone else.

While watching the Morales-Pacquiao fight yesterday, I can’t help but wonder why even those people watching on TV (that would include me, I must admit) would scream instructions to the slugger. Things like, "Wag ka dyan sa corner!" or "Jab! Straight!" or "I-uppercut mo!" or "Iwas!" or "#*&**%@!!"

Really, as if he can hear us…

Well, whatever. At least Pacquiao won.

I just wished Quinito would just shut up.

Relic

This hurts.

Yesterday I got to read Gadgets magazine. They have this page called Relic, where they feature old technology and those that have been considered "gadgets" during their time (which is like decades ago).

So what was their featured relic? Lo and behold, it’s the typewriter.

So the typewriter’s a relic now?!

Goodness, I remember using the typewriter when doing book reports in elementary and even in high school. I remember the Journ people carrying portable typewriters for their subject. I even experienced the trial-and-error way of inserting the bond paper in the correct way, and working with blackened hands after replacing the ribbon. We had loads of carbon paper at home to make duplicates (which made my hands a whole lot dirtier) and we also had to buy those correction ribbons so that editing would be a lot easier. Plus we had to make drafts on sheets of intermediate pads so that we wouldn’t have to waste too much bond paper. And I had to endure callouses brought about by my fingers slipping in between the keys.

I even remember my mom’s super-talent of typing really fast on the old and trusty typewriter. Now, she’s having a hard time working on MS Word. She even doesn’t know how to turn on the computer.

This sucks, ‘coz I know I’ll be like my mom in the future.

Ah yes, we live in a new world where technology is updated every four months.

God, no wonder I feel so old.

Violent reactions

Last night, I saw GMA7’s plug on how Mulawin the movie was praised by different entertainment columnists in both broadsheets and tabloids. I don’t remember everything, but the plug quoted the columnists as saying the movie was really good, that it had great cinematography, nice story and superb visual effects that could rival that of Hollywood.

My sister was grinning as I was repeating each phrase with disbelief. Come on! One has got to be blind to actually give the movie that kind of acclaim. Cinematography? Hello, one particular fight scene was actually yellowish, and you can just gasp at how Alwina and Aguiluz embrace each other while in flight. If that was reality, they would come crashing down the ground because the wind blown by their wings would be clashing with each other. Kaya nga may V-formation ang mga ibon, debba? Plus, the effects weren’t that much polished; you know they were shooting on green screen.

Story-wise, I had a hard time following it, especially on the first part. And my gosh, they should’ve just left Aguiluz dead. Why did the writers and the director decide to resurrect him with the help of the Encantadia people? All the drama is lost.

Visual effects? Now this one is so way off. Okay, so the dragon bit was acceptable — for Philippine standards, not Hollywood. Look, if this was okay to be Hollywood, how about Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings or King Kong? It must be amazing for Mars or the Andromeda galaxy!

Wondering why I rant about this as if I have the right? Well guess what, I WATCHED MULAWIN THE MOVIE over the Holiday break. For the sole reason that I wanted to support someone who worked behind the scenes. And no, not the director or the writers.

To be very honest, Exodus had better and more polished special effects, save for some scenes where you feel it came from a PS1 game and Bong Revilla’s stoic acting. Yes, I think it’s a special effect.

And yep, I watched Exodus too. For the same reason as Mulawin’s. Go say to the whole world I was pretty jologs last Christmas break.

Now, what to bash next…
